Remembering Our Bodies
There is a lot of information out there about how to promote health, and much of it is contradictory. Where do you start and how do you know you’re on the right track?
Let’s start with the body. We are beings that feel, and that’s why we know we’re human. We’ve all tried to forget our bodies. Our unprocessed emotions are so strong that we hyperfocus on them and bypass the fact that we have a body.
Healing Begins with the Body
Trauma and anxiety can keep us in our heads, and it’s easy to get stuck in a cycle that doesn’t let us rest. Our bodies and the felt sense of having a body are core to healing.
Breathing is a great place to learn to connect with our felt senses. Through mindfulness practices like meditation and somatics, we can notice the sensations of each inhale and exhale, and connect those sensations with the fact that yes, we are breathing.
Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Breathe. You are alive.” Healing happens in community and it begins with what our bodies already know and feel. We can tune in and find an ocean of wisdom.
